Teaching Out-of-Field

Teachers are identified as out-of-field based upon their teaching assignment and student enrollment, as identified in the Florida Department of Education Course Code Directory. Teachers who teach one or more classes of a subject that is not a subject area listed on their Florida Educator’s Certificate are considered out-of-field.

If you have been identified as teaching out-of-field, you are required to take in-service, college coursework or the subject area exam (if applicable) in the out-of-field area prior to the end of the school year in which you were placed out-of-field.  You must continue to complete the training each additional school year you are out-of-field until you have added the out-of-field subject to your certificate.  See Florida State Board Regulation Rule 6A-1.0503.

Out-of-Field Content Area Teachers

Out-of-Field ESOL Teachers

ESOL

You must complete one course within two years of the initial out-of-field date and one course each year after that.  (After completion of your first ESOL course, you must complete one course each year thereafter).  ESOL courses are available for sign up in MyPGS.  Upon completion of all five courses, you must add the ESOL endorsement to your teaching certificate.   For more information: https://www.pasco.k12.fl.us/esol.

 

GIFTED

You must complete 120 in-service points (two district courses) and/or six (6) semester college credit hours of coursework during the school year in which you are identified with gifted students.  Gifted courses are available for sign up in MyPGS.  After all five courses have been completed, the gifted endorsement can be added to your teaching certificate.  For more information: https://www.pasco.k12.fl.us/ssps/gifted/.

 

READING

You must complete 120 in-service points (two district courses) or six (6) semester college credit hours of coursework during the school year in which are you are identified out-of-field.  Reading courses are available for sign up in MyPGS.  After all five courses have been completed, the reading endorsement can be added to your teaching certificate.

 

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

Teachers who have been identified out-of-field in Autism Spectrum Disorder must complete two ASD courses during the school year to meet the out-of-field requirements. These courses are available for sign up in MyPGS. ALL OTHER OUT-OF-FIELD AREAS

If you are teaching out-of-field in any area other than the areas listed above, you must take and pass the appropriate subject area exam within the school year in which you were placed out-of-field. Test registration information can be found at Florida Teacher Certification Examinations.

 

After completion of coursework or passing the subject area exam, you must apply to have the subject area added to your certificate. You will complete that process directly with the Florida Department of Education at fldoe.org.
