Aluminum Cans

Most of the beverages sold within the District are in plastic bottles. There are a small amount of beverages sold in aluminum cans. Aluminum cans should be recycled at sporting events, after school events, in the cafeteria, and around your campus. Your school can choose to recycle aluminum cans by themselves for a school fundraiser or choose to recycle aluminum cans and plastic bottles together.

Recycled aluminum cans mixed with plastic bottles should be placed in a trash bag in your school's recycling area for collection. Liquids should be drained when possible before recycling by using a funnel top lid that fits on the 20-gallon or 32-gallon blue recycling container. A variety of recycling containers and marketing materials can be ordered for free to assist you with your recycling efforts. For specific procedures for recycling aluminum cans, please refer to the Recycling Manual.

If your school is recycling aluminum cans as a fundraiser, please bring them to a local recycling center. Another great way to recycle your aluminum cans is with Habitat for Humanity. They can provide your school with a can house to collect aluminum cans for recycling. A Habitat for Humanity representative will pick up the aluminum cans from your school as needed.

Bi-Metal Cans

Our food service employees recycle bi-metal cans in each school kitchen. These are the large bi-metal cans that beans, fruit, and other foods are stored in. The bi-metal cans should be opened leaving the lid still attached. The cans should then be thoroughly rinsed to remove food residue. The cans should be placed in a trash bag for recycling. Please do not mix plastic containers or aluminum cans in with the bi-metal cans. The can labels can be left on or removed. A variety of recycling containers and marketing materials can be ordered for free to assist you with your recycling efforts. For specific procedures for recycling bi-metal cans, please refer to the Recycling Manual.
