If you choose a public school, you must notify the state via the website and file a McKay Scholarship Public School Choice Application (please call 813-794-2774). (Please note that an online application will be coming soon.) Approval for a public school choice will be based on school capacity and either: your child has a current IEP that can be implemented at the requested school or you child has a 504 plan. Understand that if you choose a school outside the zone for your address, no transportation (even if indicated on the IEP or 504 Plan) will be provided. Understand that this selection is for the entire school year unless your child returns to his/her zoned school or service school.
Charter schools are not included in the McKay Public School Choice Program.
McKay Public School Choice cannot be used to alter or avoid IEP Team or Manifestation Determination Hearing decisions.
The parent/guardian is responsible for the transportation of a student approved to attend a school of choice through McKay Scholarship Public School Choice.
If transportation is requested and space is available, the student will be assigned to the nearest existing appropriate bus stop within the designated transportation boundaries of the approved school of choice. Bus stops will not be added outside the designated transportation boundaries of the school. Parents are responsible for ensuring that the safety and welfare of their child is maintained while traveling to and from an assigned stop. Transportation can be requested through the front office of the approved school of choice.
Transportation may be revoked if:
Accessing the transportation is deemed by the district to be unsafe for the student;
The bus becomes overcrowded. In such cases, the last approved for transportation will be the first removed. If transportation is revoked due to overcrowding, transportation will be revoked for all school choice siblings riding the same bus as the student designated as the last approved.
