Developing mutual trust and respect through proactive, transparent, consistent, bidirectional communication practices and strategies

Making earnest efforts to help families see themselves as essential and valued partners in this work and vice versa
Bidirectional Communication: Make it Plain:

Establishing a common language and understanding of MTSS and respective roles and responsibilities in supporting students’ academic, social, and behavioral success over time

Ensuring that communication is responsive, active, meaningful, positive, and assets- (vs deficits-) driven
Collaborative Problem-solving and shared responsibility for student success:

Authentically integrating and involving families into problem-solving teams at each tier of support

Building families’ capacities by providing them guidance, resources, and strategies to support their children in identified growth areas outside of school (e.g., MTSS-related data literacy, practical tips for in-home reinforcement, appropriate praise and redirection, etc.)

Using structured problem-solving to identify and remove barriers to effective family engagement
