Wiregrass Elementary Principal Hits the Roof

This post was created on 09/24/2019.

Who: Wiregrass Elementary School principal Steve Williams and students

What: Reading from the roof, an all-day, literacy-focused event to further promote reading

When: 9:40 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., Friday, October 11

Where: Wiregrass Elementary School, 29732 Wiregrass School Road, Wesley Chapel

Why: To promote reading and literacy for all students

How: Principal Steve Williams challenged Wiregrass Elementary students to read books on the Scholastic platform over the summer, log their reading minutes, and earn incentives at each level. In the end, students met the challenge and cumulatively logged more than 160,000 reading minutes. On October 11, Mr. Williams will uphold his end of the bargain. He will spend the day on the roof of the school reading textbooks, newspapers, and storybooks. Each half-hour, Mr. Williams will go live on Facebook to discuss what he’s reading and share his thoughts on the characters, illustrations, and plots. In addition, the top student readers from each group and their classmates will come outside to the courtyard throughout the day and Mr. Williams will use a megaphone to read them a story from the roof.
