TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS
FAMILIES EXPRESSED APPRECIATION FOR:
  • Reliability of drivers.
  • Consistency that helps students start and end their day with fewer disruptions.
  • Driver communication.
  • Drivers who support students during loading and unloading.
  • On-time arrivals support reduced stress and smoother morning routines.
PRIORITY TOPICS FOR FAMILIES:
  • Improve on-time performance
  • Timely late bus notifications
  • Bus overcrowding
  • Increase supervision on buses
  • Transportation solutions offered for students residing outside the 2-mile non-transport area
  • Expand school choice transportation options
CURRENT INITIATIVES:
  • Retention and recruitment of bus drivers, including hosting monthly job fairs, to better support students arriving at school on time each day
  • Expanded retraining opportunities for employees to strengthen student management skills and ensure a safe, supportive riding environment
  • Consistent review of routes to improve efficiency and proactively address overcrowding concerns
  • Ensuring timely parent notification through Where’s the Bus notifications and other District platforms of any necessary transportation related issues
  • Review department data for courtesy transportation to support eligible student transportation on time arrivals
FUTURE PLANS:

Based on the family feedback the department will:

  • Continue collaborating with district departments to improve driver retention and strengthen the recruitment of bus drivers.
  • Prioritize efforts to increase bus driver pay as a key strategy to incentivize new applicants.
  • Continue to monitor on time arrival reports and adjust route coverage and staffing as needed to ensure consistent, reliable service.
TRANSPARENCY:

Based on the Family Feedback Survey, the Transportation Department participates in community engagement opportunities and partners with planning organizations to share information, best practices, and address safety requirements. These efforts support the ongoing commitment to ensuring student safety.

CLARITY:

Families living within two miles of their zoned home school are not eligible for transportation services, and the district does not receive funding to provide transportation for these students.

Attendance at a magnet school is a choice option, and as such, transportation is not provided. School Choice transportation options offered to families have been considered a courtesy. Our department has transitioned to a lottery for school choice transportation for the 2026-2027 school year. This was decided because the number of school choice bus riders has grown beyond a sustainable level, placing additional strain on the district’s ability to maintain required transportation services.

COMMITMENT:

The Transportation Department values family feedback as it provides direct insight into the daily experiences of students and families. By listening to families, the department can be informed, ultimately improving reliability and trust. The department remains committed to supporting the families of the students we transport by prioritizing safety.
