SCHOOL SAFETY & EMERGENCY OPERATIONS
FAMILIES EXPRESSED APPRECIATION FOR:
  • A strong sense of safety when School Resource Officers and School Safety Guards are visible, entry points are controlled, and routines are consistent.
  • Clean, well-maintained facilities and visible leadership presence, which contribute to a calm and focused learning environment.
  • Timely, transparent communication during serious incidents, as well as enhancements such as added lighting and security cameras.
  • Smooth and safer arrival and dismissal when staff actively direct traffic, signage is clear, and families follow established traffic patterns.
  • Locked doors and controlled access points that are consistently staffed and follow established procedures.
  • Routine safety drills that are age-appropriate and clearly explained in advance, helping students and staff build confidence.
  • The presence of crossing guards at busy intersections, creating predictable and safer routes to campus.
PRIORITY TOPICS FOR FAMILIES:
  • Standardized, districtwide communication practices during both routine operations and safety-related events
  • Consistent discipline and adult supervision in identified hot spots (bathrooms, hallways, lunch areas) to address bullying, vaping, and fights, along with improved restroom cleanliness and monitoring during peak times
  • Enhanced traffic control at key intersections, enforcement of unsafe driving behaviors, and clear, simple maps outlining expected traffic flow
  • Clear entry and exit protocols during events and high-traffic periods to prevent bottlenecks while maintaining secure access and unobstructed emergency egress
  • Expanded lighting, visibility, and crossing supervision during early morning and evening hours, paired with reinforcement of school zone driving laws
  • Advance notification to families regarding drill days, including guidance on discussing the purpose with children to reduce anxiety and promote preparedness
CURRENT INITIATIVES:
  • Maintaining consistent emergency plans, procedures, and training across all campuses.
  • Continuing work with our district departments with the current safety school hardening projects across the district at our schools to enhance the safety at each campus.
  • Reinforcing the “See Something, Say Something” message to promote early reporting of safety concerns
  • Supporting school leaders in the consistent application of district safety protocols
  • Assisting schools experiencing traffic challenges by evaluating car line operations and offering improvement strategies.
  • Collaborating with local and regional partners to enhance traffic safety around school campuses.
  • Working with partner agencies to ensure adequate and reliable crossing guard coverage, particularly at primary schools.
  • Communicating regularly with families through newsletters, the district website, and other platforms about safety practices and the purpose and structure of drills, ensuring they remain age-appropriate and informative.
FUTURE PLANS:

Based on the Family Feedback Survey the department will:

  • Continue monitoring trends and adjusting drills to reflect real-world scenarios.
  • Develop and distribute a traffic safety and car line best practices handbook for schools prior to the 2026–2027 school year.
  • Seek funding opportunities to strengthen campus security while preserving a positive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with district departments and community partners to enhance safety measures across all locations.
TRANSPARENCY:

Safety & Emergency Operations staff participate in community engagement opportunities such as Leadership Pasco, the Citizens’ Academy, and community forums to share information about school safety practices, best practices, and compliance requirements.  Fire Drills are announced in advance, but Active Threat Drills are designed to be unannounced for the staff and the students. The safety team incorporates age-appropriate videos throughout the year to reduce anxiety and prepare the students. These efforts support transparency, trust, and informed partnerships with families.

COMMITMENT:

The Safety & Emergency Operations department values family feedback as a critical component of continuous improvement. We remain committed to working collaboratively with families, staff, and local partners, especially the Pasco Sheriff’s Office—to ensure a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for all students.
