SSPS:Regular Standards Self-Contained ESE Programs
This wiki page is a collection of program resources for regular standards self-contained ESE programs. Students with a variety of eligibilities can be served in this type of setting as long as they are pursing Florida Standards. Currently, in the state of Florida, 15% of students identified as having a disability are being served in a separate classroom environment. In this model, students with special needs do not attend classes with non-disabled students. Students being served in a separate classroom may attend the same school where regular classes are provided, but spend all instructional time exclusively in a separate classroom for students with special needs. Students being served in a self-contained setting may be provided opportunities for social integration outside the classroom; such as by eating meals with non-disabled students and attending special area classes with non-disabled peers. A special education program should be customized to address each individual student's unique needs. Special educators provide services where students with special needs receive varying degrees of support based on their individual needs. Special education programs need to be individualized so that they address the unique combination of needs in a given student.
Supports for Students being served in Regular Standards Self-Contained
Students being served in regular standards self-contained classes require accommodations to access the regular educational curriculum. Accommodations fall under assignments and assessments, instructional methods and materials, learning environment, special communication systems, and time demands and scheduling. Some typical accommodations students being served in a separate class might receive include, but are not limited to: auditory presentation of non-reading items, varied time requirements, increased practice opportunities, differentiated assignments and assignment lengths, and the like. Further, many students in separate classes require more direct instruction in order to grasp grade level concepts and require a smaller teacher to student ratio in order to gain access to increased direct instruction.
Accommodations and Standardized Assessments
Students being served in regular standards self-contained classes have access to accommodations for standardized assessments in accordance with the student’s Transition/Individual Education Plan (T/IEP). Special consideration must be given to the student’s ability to complete the assessment in the allotted time provided, the requirements of the assessment, and the student’s test taking environment. Often students being served in separate classes require fewer items on a page, increased time, and small group administration. Teachers and parents should also consider the student’s ability to participate in computer-based assessments. In some cases, paper-based assessments may be more appropriate. These accommodations must be specified in the T/IEP in order to be allowable on the standardized assessment.
