Application Guidelines for 2010-2011

What is the “National Board for Professional Teaching Standards?

In 1996 the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession called for the establishment of a National Board for Teaching Standards. The mission of NBPTS is to establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, to develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards, and to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools. The NBPTS seeks to identify and recognize teachers who effectively enhance student learning and demonstrate the high level of knowledge, skills, dispositions and commitments reflected in the following five core propositions.

  • Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.

Who is eligible?

According to NBPTS qualifications you are eligible if you:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree
  • Hold a valid state teaching license
  • Have taught a minimum of three years (You must hold a Professional Certificate when you apply.)
  • Guidance and Media must have three years experience in their areas.

What does an application cost?

All applications are now done on line at the National Board website (http://www.nbpts.org). The total application fee is currently $2500 plus an additional processing fee of $65. The Florida legislative session that concluded on May 2, 2008, made significant changes to the Dale Hickam Excellent Teacher Program (DHETP). The subsidy of $2,250 will no longer be paid by the state. Please keep watching this website for updates concerning other financial assistance that will become available.

Portions of the application fee are non-refundable. The $65 processing fee is non-refundable should the candidate choose to withdraw from the process. Part of the application fee ($500) is designated as the initial application fee and this portion is also non-refundable. This means that, should a candidate choose to withdraw from the process, this additional money would also not be refunded. A candidate would forfeit a total of $565 if the process were not completed.

When is my application due?

Check the national website for guidelines concerning portfolio and assessment center due dates. Check this website for guidelines concerning when to apply. The dates will be set when funding opportunities are announced.

How much is the “bonus” for becoming National Board Certified?

  • The Dale Hickman Excellent Teaching Program legislation provides Florida NBCT’s a 10% annual “bonus” equal to the prior year’s statewide average salary.
  • Automatic credit toward Florida Teacher Certification.

What is required for the NBPTS process?

  1. The Portfolio
    • Each candidate has to complete a portfolio which includes student work, videotapes, and teaching artifacts. The information collected will be supported by written commentary that describes, analyzes, and reflects upon practice.
    • The portfolio consists of four entries
      • Entries 1 – 3 will be completed in your classroom. Units of study will be taught and resulting student work will be collected.
      • Entry 4 will feature your work with families and the community, as well as documentation of your professional collaborations.
  2. The Assessment Process
    • Candidates will complete computer-based exercises at an assigned assessment center. Six 30 minute essays will focus on content knowledge and teaching strategies in response to prompts or stimulus materials provided on or before the day of the assessment.
