The Key Ingredients for Success…An Investment in the Future
The District School Board of Pasco County is excited to announce the ground breaking of Land O’ Lakes High Schools Culinary Arts Academy’s world class training facility. This exciting new Certified Career Academy allows students the opportunity to gain the important skills needed to succeed in high skill/high wage careers within the emerging fields of Culinary Arts and Agriculture.
The Academy features a state-of-the-art facility that includes three distinct training kitchens, a theatre style 60-seat class room/laboratory with a fully functional demonstration station and video technology that feeds throughout the entire facility. Demonstrations can be viewed on flat panel screens located in every kitchen. Each kitchen is designed with the learner in mind. The building design has a built in expansion component for growth. The Academy will open with a District partner, the Food and Nutrition Services Department, to share the facility and serve Café style lunches to the staff, visitors and community.
The Academy of Culinary Arts will have a cutting edge emphasis on natural, sustainable cuisine and local agriculture. The local agriculture program will collaborate with the academy to introduce the freshest campus-grown ingredients. Together this partnership will afford students the opportunity to learn about the science and appreciation of foods as they cultivate vegetable and meat products from the field to the table.
The Curriculum will feature the Florida ProStart Certificate of Achievement and the program of study will lead students to the ServSafe Food Safety Certificate, American Culinarian Federation Certifications and post secondary articulation. Partners already include: The International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Tampa and Johnson and Wales University.
The Academy was destined for success right from the start. A team of dedicated school and business stakeholders have worked collaboratively to design a training facility that will provide learning opportunities both in the form of observing instructors while they explain their cooking, and by including work stations for students to learn through hands-on practice. Through an intense research and development initiative and the input of culinary professionals throughout the state and the country the Land O’ Lakes Academy of Culinary Arts facility will truly be a “World Class Culinary Training Facility.” Please join us as we celebrate the ground breaking of this important project:

Wesley Chapel High School Television Production student places at state finals
??Josh Lane’s “The Road to Respect”
Wesley Chapel High School graduate Josh Lane created a documentary called “The Road to Respect,” which placed in the top three documentaries for the state of Florida in the 2009-2010 Jim Harbin Florida Association for Media in Education student film contest.
The documentary covers the St. Leo University men’s lacrosse team and its history since the program’s inception. During the 2009-2010 school year, the video earned honors as the top documentary in Pasco County and took first place honors in the Region 4 competition. Lane will learn in November which place he received at the state level of the competition.
This is the third consecutive year that the Wesley Chapel High School Television Production program has had a video place in the top three at the state finals level of the FAME student video competition.

Wesley Chapel Academy of Automotive Technology Induction Night
Wesley Chapel High School Automotive technology students get recognized and awarded academy shirts at the Automotive Technology Career Academy “Induction Night”. Parents and students attended the event beginning in the WCHS Center for Performing Arts. WCHS TV production primed the event with a slide show presentation showing off the Automotive Academy, School district and Industry Partners, set to the theme of rock and roll car songs. Automotive 1 students were first to the stage to shake hands with their instructor and receive their t-shirts. Next up, the Advanced Automotive Service Technology students were given special treatment as the industry representatives from Toyota, Kia, Honda, Ford and BT Automotive came on stage to cloak the students in their new academy uniform shirts. After the ceremony guest were invited to the classroom for appetizers and snacks. Parents and students had an opportunity to speak with dealer representatives who gratefully answered many questions about career paths and employment opportunities. Local community and businesses have shown tremendous support for the school and the new auto program. Winners Sports Grill supplied appetizers; Advantage Promotional Products gave over 300 cookies. Heritage Ford and Atlas Towing sponsored the shirts, and all the dealer representatives brought hats and t-shirts to give away as door prizes. This was a full out business, community and education coming together event to show support and recognize the new and advanced automotive students for the 2010-11 school year.

Career Academies Growing Rapidly
Pasco’s high school career academies are thriving! New academies this school year include the Academy of Energy at Anclote High School, the Academy of Engineering at River Ridge High School, the Building Technologies Academy and the Academy of Health at Pasco High School, and Wesley Chapel High School’s Academy of Automotive Service Technology. Enrollment at the academies is growing, with students at River Ridge registering for the Academy of Engineering in numbers significantly higher than expected. More than 80 students at the Academy of Health at Gulf, Pasco, Zephyrhills, Mitchell, and Ridgewood High Schools are ready to take the upcoming Certified Nursing Assistant Exam, which when passed, will position them for employment opportunities after graduation. Expansion plans for the next school year include adding a teacher at the Engineering and the Building Technologies Academies and refurbishing an additional classroom for Ridgewood’s Academy of Health. The District’s Career and Technical Education, Curriculum and Instructional Services, Transportation and Student Services departments will continue to collaborate so that Pasco high school students have high-quality educational choices through Career Academies.
