Lake O’ Lakes, FL – (June 10, 2013) – The Gulfside Elementary School Lunch Bus will be adding a mobile library to put books in the hands of needy children this summer while also putting food in their bellies.

For the last two years, Gulfside has offered the summer feeding program at the school for children age 18 and under. The first summer, staff noticed that too few kids were stopping by for the meals and realized that getting to the school was the problem. In an effort to feed more children, Gulfside and the district’s Food and Nutrition staff created the summer Lunch Bus.

The summer Lunch Bus will serve meals from Wednesday, June 12 through Friday, August 2, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the following stops:

	Stop #1
	3528 Atlantis Dr.
Holiday Lakes Estates (near the Holiday Lakes Civic Center)
	11 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

	Stop #2
Westin Oaks Apartments (by the pool)
1251 Weston Oaks Dr., Holiday (Alternate 19)
	11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In addition to offering the Lunch Bus, Gulfside Elementary will serve free breakfast at the school each day at 9 a.m. and free lunch at 12:30 p.m. Gulfside is located at 2329 Anclote Blvd., Holiday. For more information contact Gulfside Elementary School principal Chris Clayton at 727-774-6000.

Land O’ Lakes, FL – (June 7, 2013) – District School Board of Pasco County students outperformed the state on Biology, Geometry, and U.S. History end-of-course exams while matching the state passing percentage in Algebra.

Overall, fewer students scored at level one on elementary and middle school math, reading, and science, and more students scored at high proficiency levels (level 4 and 5) in science and reading.

Eleven of 14 high schools (79 percent) showed improvement on 10th grade FCAT 2.0 Reading, and nine showed improvement or held steady in 9th grade. Sixty-five percent of schools increased 4th grade reading proficiency percentages, and 61 percent of schools increased fifth grade reading proficiency percentages.

Fifth graders showed the most improvement on FCAT 2.0 Math, improving by three percentage points, followed by sixth grade with an overall two percentage point increase. Fourth, seventh, and eighth graders increased proficiency by one percentage point each.

“We have many things to celebrate, especially the EOC scores, but I remain concerned about flat elementary reading and math scores and our fifth grade science scores,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning.

Pasco Schools Increase FCAT Proficiency

Land O’ Lakes, FL – (May 24, 2013) – Pasco County students increased proficiency on the 2013 FCAT 2.0 Writing, Grade 3 Reading and Grade 3 Math. Some subgroups showed significant improvement.

“I want to thank all of our teachers, school administrators, and district and school staff who worked all year to help our students achieve these results,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning.

	Writing

Writing scores improved across the board, yet there is more work to do because the percentage of students scoring proficient in 4th and 8th grade fell below the percentage statewide. The percentage of tenth graders achieving proficient scores exceeded the state percentage.
Some subgroups made significant improvements over last year’s scores:

Hispanic 4th graders – percent proficient increased 12 percentage points

African American 4th graders – percent proficient increased 9 percentage points

Hispanic 10th graders – percent proficient increased 9 percentage points

8th grade English Language Learners – increased proficiency 13 percentage points

Overall, the percentage of district 4th graders scoring a 3.5 improved by 12 percentage points from last year compared to the statewide increase of 9 percentage points. District 4th graders scoring at 4 or above improved 11 percentage points while the state improved 10 percentage points.

District 10th grade scoring 3.5 improved by 6 percentage points (statewide = 2% increase). The percentage of district 10th graders scoring level 4 or higher increased 7 points (state = 2% increase).
Overall, 88 percent of elementary schools increased their 4th grade scores, 64 percent of middle schools increased their 8th grade scores, and 75 percent of high schools increased their 10th grade scores. Schools showing significant improvement include Connerton, Cox, Gulf Trace, Odessa, Seven Oaks, Trinity Oaks, Veterans, and Wesley Chapel elementary schools; Hudson and Weightman middle schools; and River Ridge High School.

	Reading

Third grade reading scores are trending in the right direction and the district proficiency percentage exceeds the state. Overall, 71 percent of schools increased their proficiency percentages, and 75 percent of Title 1 schools increased proficiency. The percentage scoring a level 3 and above is up 2 percent from last year, and fewer students are scoring at level 1 and 2 (down 2 percent). Oakstead, Longleaf, Odessa, Seven Oaks, Trinity Oaks, and Wesley Chapel elementary schools all had 75 percent or more of students score level 3 or higher.

	Math

Third grade math scores also are trending in the right direction, but they are not where they should be. “We have significant work to do in math,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning.

A higher percentage of Title 1 schools increased the percentage of students achieving proficient scores than district schools overall. Fifty-four percent of Title 1 schools increased the percentage of students scoring at level 3 or above, while the district saw a 48 percent increase overall.

Lake Myrtle, Longleaf, Sand Pine, Seven Oaks, Trinity Oaks, and Veterans elementary schools all had 70 percent or more achieving proficient scores.

	Biology EOC

Sixty-eight percent of students district-wide scored a 3 or higher on the Biology end-of- course exam. Seven schools scored above the district mean. State data will not be available until June.

Land O’ Lakes, FL – (May 20, 2013) – We are disappointed that Governor Scott vetoed the $1.5 million the Legislature appropriated for the Pasco County K-20 STEM Magnet Academy. We remain convinced that a science, technology, engineering, and math magnet academy is needed in Pasco County Public Schools, and we plan to continue our pursuit of a viable source of funding to get it started.

I want to thank Senator John Legg and House Speaker Will Weatherford, as well as the entire Pasco County Legislative Delegation, for their unwavering support for this worthwhile program.

Considering the increasing number of STEM-related jobs in Florida, the District School Board of Pasco County knows that preparing students for careers in STEM is crucial. With this Academy, our goal is to graduate students who are ready to further their STEM education or go straight to work in high-wage, high-skill jobs.
