Pasco Sheriff’s Office, Fire Rescue to Conduct Unique Drill with San Antonio Elementary

Who:  San Antonio Elementary School students and staff, Pasco Sheriff’s Office, and Pasco Fire Rescue

What:  Off-Site Evacuation Drill

When:  10 a.m. Friday, March 15

Where:  From San Antonio Elementary School (32416 Darby Road, San Antonio) to San Antonio Athletic Complex (12750 Oak St., San Antonio) senior field

Why:  The Pasco County Schools Active Threat Plan requires each school to identify an off-campus location for family reunification in the event of a crisis that requires an off-site evacuation.  The sheriff’s office and school district regularly conduct ATP drills in order to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

How:  The drill involves the evacuation of San Antonio Elementary School due to a gas leak.  Parents have been notified and given the ability to opt-out their children.  The PSO will accompany students from the school to the park, where Fire Rescue will be staged.  Students will return to school on school buses.  The following roads will be closed for the safety of students and staff as they walk along Antonio Way:

  • Darby Road at Antonio Way
  • Pasco Road at Antonio Way
  • 7th Avenue at Oak Street
  • Railroad Avenue at Oak Street

Media staging will be on the ballfield located closest to the corner of Railroad Avenue and Oak Street.  Media must remain on the opposite side of the fence from the field on which students are staging.  Pasco County Schools PIO will be Wayne Bertsch.  Lt. James Law or Lt. Troy Fergueson will be available for sound from the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.  Media planning to cover the drill should arrive at the media staging area by 10 a.m. to avoid road closures.

After students arrive back at school, they will eat lunch, and the sheriff’s office will have various vehicles on display for them to check out.  A K9 demonstration also is planned.
