Pasco Schools to Make First Safety Guard Employment Offers
Land O’ Lakes, FL – (May 11, 2018) – Pasco County Schools is making employment offers today to nine applicants who interviewed yesterday for elementary school safety guard positions. Another 28 applicants have been approved by interview panels and will be offered employment pending reference checks.
Teams of three made up of Pasco Schools administrators and Pasco Sheriff’s Office resource officers interviewed more than 50 applicants Thursday afternoon and evening. The interviewed applicants were selected from the initial pool of 125, and all had extensive law enforcement, military, and/or security backgrounds.
Dozens more potential applicants attended information sessions and submitted applications last evening. A second round of interviews is scheduled for May 21, with applicants who were not able to submit applications before the district had to suspend the process to review the initial 125 submissions for yesterday’s interviews.
The School Board approved Superintendent Kurt Browning’s proposal to hire 53 elementary school safety guards at their May 1, regular meeting, in order to comply with provisions of SB 7026. The application window went live that morning, and was suspended last Friday due to the overwhelming response.
“I’m thrilled at the response from so many very highly quality, experienced law enforcement personnel,” said Superintendent Kurt Browning.
Those hired for the position will complete one week of paid orientation and classroom training June 4 through June 8, and one week of paid Pasco Sheriff’s Office training between June 11 and July 10. Guards also will undergo drug, psychological, and fitness assessments.
