Pasco School Board Names New Elementary and High Schools
Land O’ Lakes, FL – (November 1, 2016) – The District School Board of Pasco County named the new elementary school under construction in Land O’ Lakes “Bexley Elementary School” and the new high school under construction in Wesley Chapel “Cypress Creek High School” at today’s board meeting. Board Vice Chairman Allen Altman moved to name the elementary school and Board Member Alison Crumbley moved to name the high school. The Board approved both school names unanimously.
The Board accepted suggestions from the community for the school names from August 29 through October 1. A total of 23 submissions for the elementary school and 70 submissions for the high school were made.
Bexley Elementary is scheduled to open in August on Ballantrae Boulevard, in the Bexley Ranch community. The school will relieve overcrowding at Odessa and Oakstead elementary schools. Bexley Elementary is projected to open with approximately 706 students, drawn from Odessa and Oakstead.
Cypress Creek High is scheduled to open in August on Old Pasco Road, in Wesley Chapel. It will serve students in grades 6 through 11 its first year. The middle school area of campus is projected to open with approximately 1,070 students and will relieve overcrowding at Charles S. Rushe, Dr. John Long, and Thomas E. Weightman middle schools. The high school area of campus is projected to open with approximately 1,444 students and will relieve overcrowding at Wesley Chapel, Wiregrass Ranch, and Sunlake high schools. Cypress Creek High will have academic and athletic programs similar to other Pasco high schools.
Students who will be 12th graders at Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch high schools in 2017-18 will remain at those schools. Also, the current proposal calls for a four-year phase-in of 675 students who currently live in Sunlake’s boundary. Only 9th grade students within those lines will go to Cypress Creek in 2017-18. Students within those lines entering 10th through 12th grade next year will stay at Sunlake. The following year, 9th and 10th graders will attend Cypress Creek, in 2019, we will add 11th grade, and in 2020, we will add 12th grade.
A parent meeting to share information about the proposed boundary for Cypress Creek High School is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, in the Wesley Chapel High School cafeteria, 30651 Wells Road in Wesley Chapel.
During the meeting, staff will review the boundary process and discuss the factors that contributed to the recommended boundary changes. We also will accept parent feedback at that time. Feedback received at the parent meeting will be considered at a third boundary committee meeting, scheduled for December 2, before making a recommendation to the School Board to approve new boundaries. The board-approved boundaries will take effect with the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.
Both schools’ principals will be named in December and will assume their responsibilities in February.
