Quail Hollow Elementary Students Building Lego Robots

Who: Quail Hollow Elementary School students

What: First Lego League

When: 4:10 p.m., Thursday, November 15

Where: Quail Hollow Elementary School collaboration room, 7050 Quail Hollow Blvd., Wesley Chapel

Why: To develop students’ critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and presentation skills, which they must use to present to judges their solutions with a dash of creativity.

How: First Lego League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology. They then compete on a table-top playing field.  It all adds up to tons of fun while students learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem.

Students Participate in Socktober to benefit Pasco Homeless Coalition

Who: Fivay, River Ridge, and Wendell Krinn Techincal high school  students and staff, and the Pasco Homeless Coalition

What: Kid President’s Socktober Caring Project

When: 9 a.m., Tuesday, November 13

Where: Pasco Homeless Coalition, 5652 Pine St, New Port Richey

Why: The school-wide event promoted the culture of caring among all grade levels and staff to benefit the Pasco Homeless Coalition.

How: The high schools partnered up during the month of October to collect more than 3,500 pairs of socks. The River Ridge Royal Ambassadors created a marketing video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5g0l-6XVA) and posters. River Ridge students competed by grade level to collect pairs of socks, with the following results:
6th grade – 1,322
7th grade – 425
8th grade – 861
River Ridge Grand Total – 2,608
Wendell Krinn Tech – 979
Fivay High School – 100

Sixth grader Sean Thomas-Nappi donated more than 700 pairs of socks.

5th Annual Pasco County Schools Veterans Day Ceremony

What: 5th Annual Veterans Day Ceremony Hosted by Superintendent Kurt S. Browning, the District School Board of Pasco County, and Supervisor of Elections, Brian Corley

When: 9 a.m., Friday, November 9

Where: Center for the Arts at River Ridge High School, 11646 Town Center Rd, New Port Richey

Why: To celebrate our veterans.

How: Keynote speakers, U.S. Army Sergeant Gary B. Beikirch, a Medal of Honor recipient, and U.S. Navy Petty Officer, Valerie Blasewitz, will speak to attendees.

District Hosts Fall Instructional Job Fair

What: Fall Instructional Job Fair

Why: Pasco County Schools is seeking candidates for the following positions:

Where: Veterans Elementary School, 26940 Progress Pkwy, Wesley Chapel

Why: To honor and celebrate veterans in our community.

How: Community members who currently serve or have served in the military are invited to attend the second annual barbecue event.

What: A Salute to our Veterans Program

When: 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 9

Where: Veterans Elementary School, 26940 Progress Pkwy, Wesley Chapel

Why: To honor and celebrate veterans in our community.

How: The American Legion Paradise Post #79 Honor Guard will present and post Colors, Commander Steve Miller, US Air Force, and Master Sergeant Marcie Carpenter, US Army, will speak. The Lightning Chorus will perform three patriotic songs.

What: A Salute to our Veterans Program

When: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, November 9

Where: Odessa Elementary School, 12810 Interlaken Road, New Port Richey

Why: To honor and celebrate veterans in our community.

How: The Odessa Wildcat Chorus, River Ridge Middle School Chorus, and select students from the J.W. Mitchell High School Marching Mustang Band, will be performing patriotic selections during the program. USMC Master Gunnery Sergeant Paul Olson, and US Army Major Jennifer Olson, will be the guest speakers.
